  1. The phantom #1 is indeed the man they escort earlier in the film. I thought it first when he expertly shoots some assailants when Goro Hanada is away. Later, when #1 is revealed, he says to Hanada that he is warning him that he is going to kill him as payment for escorting him. Normally he would just kill him, but he owes him the warning.
