Episode 240: The Beyond (1981)

Guest Co-Host: Troy Howarth

Lucio Fulci's The Beyond stars Catriona MacColl as Liza who opens a hotel built on a hellmouth in Louisiana. This proximity to a center of evil only helps spur some pretty strange occurrences and maybe a few lapses in judgment along the way.

Fortunately, we have Fulci expert , author of Splintered Visions: Lucio Fulci and his Films, to help guide us through the surrealistic 1981 horror/art film.

  1. I know you prefer to get interviewees, but I equally enjoy these episodes where it's just you guys chewing over a film. :)

As far as Italian horror goes, have you considered covering CEMETERY MAN (aka: Dellamorte Dellamore)? I think you guys would have a field day with that film, it's sooo ripe on so many levels. I'd love to hear your philosophical discussions that this film would instigate!

  2. Glad you brought up the Ebert review. For years that's been my go-to reference for Ebert at his most dismissive, condescending & lazy. He doesn't even care enough to correctly title DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING, misnaming it "Don't Torture THE Duckling."

Other hateful Ebert reviews that stick out in my memory:

THE BROOD: ""The Brood" is an el sleazo exploitation film, camouflaged by the presence of several well-known stars but guaranteed to nauseate you all the same."

    DEATH RACE 2000 (http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/death-race-2000)

PIRANHA (I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie. Pg 277.)

I don't want to be seen as a hater who's raking a dead guy over the coals. It's always touchy critiquing the much-beloved deceased.

  3. Another awesome show. Consistently blown away at the quality of the information and the presentation of the PB. Absolutely buries every other podcast - in any genre- I've heard. Extraordinary. Great guests, including this episode. Love the older voices, love the female voices. Love love love.

  4. Great episode once again. I used to be a big fan of the splatter genre and now I'm getting to rediscover the work of Lucio Fulci focusing more on the poetic and symbolic imagery scattered inside his films. Love the detail of your analysis and the use of an expert on Fulci to discuss it. Also, the interview with Catriona is the cherry on top! Congrats.
